NEWS

Reviving mining stocks pushed the Toronto stock market to a second positive session Monday, but the TSX closed well off the best levels of the day as buying interest in stocks that were beaten down during last week’s selloffs faded late in the afternoon.

New York markets found it harder to gain traction with investors unconvinced the selloff, sparked by interest rate worries, has run its course and indexes put in a flat close.

Toronto’s S&P/TSX composite index gained 34.32 points to 13,832.82 after losing more than 2% last week, a long way from the 95-point runup reached earlier in the session as early gains in financials and energy stocks fizzled.

The Canadian dollar was off 0.03 of a cent to 94.29 cents US.
Investors will be looking to inflation data later in the week to determine whether last week’s selloff was overdone. On Thursday, the U.S. Labour Department releases its producer price index, while on Friday the consumer price index is due. Fed chair Ben Bernanke is also scheduled to speak about inflation on Friday.

Besides sending stocks lower last week, inflation concerns sent the U.S. 10-year Treasury bond yield above 5%, a level not seen since last summer.

Yields, which move in the opposite direction of bond prices, rose on the 10-year note to 5.14% Monday from 5.13% late Friday.

The TSX was weak aside from the mining sector, which rose 2.17%.
The energy sector was up 0.08% as the July crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange gained $1.21 to $65.97 a barrel as traders thought Friday’s selloff of more than $2 a barrel was overdone.

The TSX industrial group rose 0.41%.
On the TSX, advances beat declines 803 to 786 with 240 unchanged as 292.3 million shares traded worth $5.2 billion. (Canadian Press) /
