NEWS
The Toronto stock market drifted to a flat closed Tuesday as weakness in financial and gold stocks overcame strength from mines and energy stocks.

In New York, indexes were down sharply after comments from Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and a strong reading on the service sector suggested the central bank has little reason to lower interest rates.

Toronto’s S&P/TSX composite index moved down 5.05 points from its record close Monday to 14,141.69. The TSX is up about 9.5% year to date with expectations for more upward movement, but not necessarily in a straight line.

The momentum of the Canadian dollar slackened after the currency charged ahead about 1.25 US cents in the previous three sessions. The loonie was off 0.41 cent at 94.07 cents US.

On the TSX, the financial sector moved 0.23% lower.
The gold sector faded 0.34% with the August bullion contract on the Nymex down $1.20 to $675.10 an ounce.
The mining group was the strongest TSX advancer, up almost 1%.
The energy sector was up 0.6% as oil prices bounced off early lows. Light sweet crude for July delivery was off 60 cents to $65.61 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after surging $1.13 on Monday.

On the Toronto market, declines beat advances 859 to 768 with 238 unchanged as 385.8 million shares traded worth $6.9 billion. (Canadian Press)
