NEWS
North American stock markets headed lower Thursday with slides in mining stocks pressuring the Toronto market while a lacklustre retail report raised fresh fears about the health of the consumer drove New York markets sharply lower

The Canadian dollar was down 0.47 of a cent to $89.99. Statistics Canada announced that Canada’s merchandise trade surplus with the world contracted to $4.6 billion from a revised $5.2 billion in February as both imports and exports grew to record highs.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials tumbled 147.74 points to 13,215.13 a day after the U.S. Federal Reserve left short-term interest rates unchanged and signalled that inflation remains stubborn.

Some investors were disappointed that the Fed did not raise the possibility of a future rate cut.
Higher gasoline prices and the sluggish housing market kept consumers, particularly low- and middle-income earners, out of stores last month, leaving many U.S. merchants with disappointing sales results.

The weak showing on markets comes amid indexes resting at or very close to record levels, spurred by higher than expected quarterly earnings and increasing share buybacks by companies which have driven shares prices upward.

Also prompting the spell of profit taking were data from the U.S. Commerce Department showing the trade deficit increased 10.4% in March from February to $63.9 billion, which again raised worries about inflation.

The TSX energy sector was down 0.6% as oil prices rose despite a U.S. report showing an increase in stocks of gasoline, crude and distillate fuels, with investors worried about violence in Nigeria, Africa’s largest producer and a leading supplier to the United States.

The June crude oil contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange headed 26 cents higher to $61.81 a barrel.
The mining sector lost 1.4%.
Gold stocks also suffered as the June bullion contract on the Nymex faded $15.50 to $667 an ounce, taking the gold sector down 2.17%.

On the TSX, declines beat advances 944 to 682 with 232 unchanged as 419.4 million shares traded worth $6.8 billion.(Canadian Press)
