NEWS
Lower energy stocks pushed the Toronto stock market lower but U.S. markets finished higher Wednesday after the U.S. Federal Reserve again opted to leave its key interest rate unchanged at 5.25%.

While there was no signal that a hoped-for interest rate cut is any closer, there also was no indication that the central bank plans a rate hike.

There was some disappointment the Fed did not modify its worries about inflation given recent data showing price pressures have eased a bit.

Toronto’s S&P/TSX composite index snapped a five session winning streak with the main source of weakness the energy sector after new data showed rising levels of gasoline and oil supplies in the U.S., moving down 20.2 points to 13,895.16

But the Toronto tech sector was up 1.4%, with Research In Motion Ltd. ahead $8.53 to $170.82 on top of Tuesday’s 5.3% advance.

The energy sector gave up earlier gains to move down 0.57% after the U.S. Department of Energy said gasoline supplies climbed for the first time in 13 weeks, rising 400,000 barrels.

Also, crude oil supplies made their biggest climb since mid-January, up 5.6 million barrels, sending the June crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange down 71 cents to $61.55 a barrel.

The mining sector improved by 2.5%.
The financial sector declined 0.23%.
On the TSX, advances beat declines 818 to 797 with 243 unchanged as 471.1 million shares traded worth $8.4 billion. (Canadian Press)
