The Toronto stock market moved back into record territory Friday as energy stocks moved higher despite falling oil prices, mining stocks advanced following the latest round of dealmaking in the sector and sentiment got a boost from inflation news contained in the latest reading on U.S. employment.

U.S. markets racked up modest gains as investors decided to take profits from the recent strong runup.
The U.S. Labour Department reported that payrolls grew by just 88,000 last month as job losses spread beyond manufacturing and construction into retailing and financial services.

Also, the U.S. jobless rate edged up a 10th of a point to 4.5%.
But hourly earnings moved up 0.2%, against the 0.3% reading that had been expected.
While New York gains were modest for the week, the Dow ran ahead 5.8% and the Dow and S&P 500 ahead 4.3% in April.
The TSX had run up 3.5% for the month up until Monday, when it shed 215 points.
On the TSX, the energy sector moved up 0.83% with the June crude oil contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange down $1.26 to $61.93 a barrel.

The mining sector moved up 2% as stocks continued to run higher a day after Russia’s biggest mining and metals company, Norilsk Nickel, trumped a $4.6-billion bid for Toronto’s LionOre Mining International Ltd. by Swiss miner Xstrata.

Support also came from the financials sector, up 0.47% with Royal Bank up 86 cents to $58.46.
On the TSX, advancers beat declines 963 to 627 with 218 unchanged as 464.5 million shares traded worth $8 billion.(Canadian Press)
